Tips To Protect Yourself From Winter Allergies

Your skin is prone to damage in the winter season. Cracked skin and peeling of lips is a common problem nearly everyone faces. Moreover, despite the sun being at its least bright, it would be unwise to ignore the problem of ultra violet rays.

Save your skin from the sun

During winter you need to protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun. The sun rays can make you suffer from severe rashes and skin allergies. So, do not forget to use a good quality sunscreen that guards against the ill-effects of the ultra violet rays. Look for a sunscreen with the label SPF 15 or above.

Moisturisers

You need to apply moisturisers to your skin for treating the dry condition. Rather than using the usual petroleum jelly, it is advisable that you prefer the lotions that contain vegetable oils and aloe vera. Mineral oils should be avoided as they clog your pores.

Treating rough skin area

If you have a rough and chapped area on the skin, rubbing a vitamin E capsule directly on it can help to treat the condition.

Do not go near smokers

Your problems of coughing and breathing is only going to get aggravated by sitting close to smokers. This is especially true for people more sensitive to allergies in winter.

Keep away from these foods

Cheese, ice-cream, yoghurt, banana, cucumber and eggs can cause allergic reaction to some in winter. Particularly the asthma patients would be well advised to avoid these foods. Instead take to fresh fruit juices and green tea. They give relief in your condition and also boost immunity.

Avoid alcohol

You do not want to bring your immunity down in winter, as you need your body to fight against its harshness. Alcohol robs your body of vitamins and has a skin ageing effect.

Intake of protein rich food

Protein rich foods or those that have a lot of omega 3 fatty acids must form a part of your diet in winter. Some foods that contain these are soya bean, pumpkin seeds and walnuts. The anti-inflammatory properties of these foods make you stronger from within to fight the severities of winter.
Follow the tips given here to safeguard your health during winter and protect yourself from the usual health conditions people suffer from in the season.

Why Health Insurance Is Important To For Employees And Business Owners

Being Uninsured Has a Negative Impact on Health
According to the Urban Institute report “Why Health Insurance is Important,” by Bovbjerg and Hadley (2007), the three most prominent reasons why being insured is essential to health care are:
1. Uninsured people get less medical care and less timely care.
Insurance provides access to medical professionals for timely diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses and makes on-going treatments and preventive monitoring possible. The severity of an illness is largely determined by whether or not it is treated early or late in the disease process. Regarding preventive health maintenance and insurance, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has found that uninsured people are less likely to be recommended to have screening tests such as mammograms, pap smears and colorectal exams (IOM, 2002). Without early or timely diagnosis and treatment, chronic and potentially fatal diseases such as cancer, hypertension and diabetes get worse over time, resulting in even more severe and complex medical conditions and complications that are more difficult and expensive to treat.
Absence of treatment and delayed treatment are dangerous because they allow diseases to progress and cause end organ damage, resulting in problems such as heart attacks, stroke, kidney failure and blindness, which cause significant morbidity, disability, and reduced productivity.
2. Health outcomes are worse for the uninsured.
It is well documented that the uninsured have poorer health and shorter life-spans than people with health insurance. The Henry J. Kaiser Foundation report that in 2006, nearly 47 million Americans under the age of 65 were uninsured. According to the IOM, lack of health insurance is directly responsible for the deaths of 18,000 American adults, annually (Bovbjerg and Hadley, 2007).
Population based studies performed for a period lasting 5 to 7 years reveal that uninsured adults between the ages of 55 and 65 have a 25% greater chance of dying than adults of the same age who are privately insured (IOM, 2002). Uninsured heart attack victims are more likely to die in the hospital or shortly after release than those who have private insurance. With respect to accidents, one statewide study showed that uninsured crash victims had a death rate that was 37 percent higher than for those who were privately insured (IOM, 2002).
3. Lack of insurance is a fiscal burden for uninsured people and their families.
Medical bills are a factor in 16 percent of bankruptcies, and uninsured families are 2 to 3 times more likely to report having problems with medical bills. A high population of uninsured individuals can be burdensome to health care providers because of the demand of free or reduced fee care (Bovbjerg and Hadley, 2007). Illnesses and absence of well being negatively impact job performance via reduced productivity and absenteeism. Because illness reduces the ability to work, it also reduces the amount of money than can be earned. Absenteeism is also costly for businesses.
Who Benefits Most From Having Health Insurance?
The IOM has found that adults in late middle age and those with chronic diseases are most likely to benefit from health insurance coverage because they are less healthy than younger adults. Racial and ethnic minorities also would benefit from health insurance coverage because of lower general health status (IOM, 2002).
What is Adequate Health Insurance?
According to the IOM, heath care should be such that it ensures “adequate provider participation...that includes preventive and screening services, outpatient prescription drugs and specialty mental health care” (IOM, 2002).
What All This Means for You
This information shared in this article makes it plain that having insurance should be a priority in life for employees as well as the self employed. Once the “why” of health insurance is accepted, the challenge becomes “how - to” obtain health insurance, if you are unemployed. CNN Money gives the following basic pointers (CNN Money, n.d.):
  1. If your employer offers insurance, accept it!
  2. If you are self employed, price out the insurance options available for your budget. (Online resources and your local Chamber of Commerce are good resources to help you make a list of your insurance options.)
  3. Always compare plans. Keep in mind that the cheapest plan is the one with the best price for the services you are likely to use.
  4. Look for out of pocket expenses, coverage for doctor visits and hospitalization.
  5. Evaluate your options for mental health, prescription drugs, dental and vision coverage.
  6. Take time to get information online about health care networks you are considering.
  7. Talk to your accountant about tax breaks that are available for your personal and business taxes.
Conclusion
Uninsured people have poorer health and die sooner than those who are insured. Because being uninsured negatively impacts health, longevity and earnings, it is more costly to not have insurance than it is to have it. With respect to personal finances, as well as business, family and estate planning, having adequate health insurance is a major priority

Top 10 Human Viruses

1. Human Papillomavirus

  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus from the papillomavirus family that is capable of infecting humans. Like all papillomaviruses, HPVs establish productive infections only in keratinocytes of the skin or mucous membranes. While the majority of the nearly 200 known types of HPV cause no symptoms in most people, some types can cause warts (verrucae), while others can – in a minority of cases lead to cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, and anus in women or cancers of the anus and penis in men. It can also cause cancers of the head and neck (tongue, tonsils and throat). Recently, HPV has been linked with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
More than 30 to 40 types of HPV are typically transmitted through sexual contact and infect the anogenital region. Some sexually transmitted HPV types may cause genital warts. Persistent infection with “high-risk” HPV types different from the ones that cause skin warts may progress to precancerous lesions and invasive cancer. HPV infection is a cause of nearly all cases of cervical cancer. However, most infections with these types do not cause disease.

    2. HIV/AIDS

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the cause of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). HIV can be transmitted sexually, via contaminated needles or blood transfusions, and from mother to child during pregnancy, birth or breast-feeding. The primary navigation template for this category is AIDS.

    3. Encephalitis

Encephalitis literally means an inflammation of the brain, but it usually refers to brain inflammation caused by a virus. It’s a rare disease that occurs in approximately 0.5 per 100,000 individuals most commonly in children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Although several thousand cases of encephalitis (also called acute viral encephalitis or aseptic encephalitis) are reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) every year, experts suspect that many more may go unreported because the symptoms are so mild.

    4. Yellow Fever

The yellow fever virus is transmitted by the bite of female mosquitoes (the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, and other species) and is found in tropical and subtropical areas in South America and Africa, but not in Asia. The only known hosts of the virus are primates and several species of mosquito. The origin of the disease is most likely to be Africa, from where it was introduced to South America through the slave trade in the 16th century. Since the 17th century, several major epidemics of the disease have been recorded in the Americas, Africa and Europe. In the 19th century, yellow fever was deemed one of the most dangerous infectious diseases.

    5. Hepatitis

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, most commonly caused by a viral infection. There are five main hepatitis viruses, referred to as types A, B, C, D and E. These five types are of greatest concern because of the burden of illness and death they cause and the potential for outbreaks and epidemic spread. In particular, types B and C lead to chronic disease in hundreds of millions of people and, together, are the most common cause of liver cirrhosis and cancer. Hepatitis A and E are typically caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water. Hepatitis B, C and D usually occur as a result of parenteral contact with infected body fluids. Common modes of transmission for these viruses include receipt of contaminated blood or blood products, invasive medical procedures using contaminated equipment and for hepatitis B transmission from mother to baby at birth, from family member to child, and also by sexual contact. Acute infection may occur with limited or no symptoms, or may include symptoms such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), dark urine, extreme fatigue, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

    6. Herpes

Herpes viruses are a leading cause of human viral disease, second only to influenza and cold viruses. They are capable of causing overt disease or remaining silent for many years only to be reactivated, for example as shingles. The name herpes comes from the Latin herpes which, in turn, comes from the Greek word herpein which means to creep. This reflects the creeping or spreading nature of the skin lesions caused by many herpes virus types. There are at least 25 viruses in the family Herpesviridae. Eight or more herpes virus types are known to infect man frequently.

    7. Rotavirus

Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhoea among infants and young children, and is one of several viruses that cause infections often called stomach flu, despite having no relation to influenza. It is a genus of double-stranded RNA virus in the family Reoviridae. By the age of five, nearly every child in the world has been infected with rotavirus at least once. However, with each infection, immunity develops, and subsequent infections are less severe; adults are rarely affected. There are five species of this virus, referred to as A, B, C, D, and E. Rotavirus A, the most common, causes more than 90% of infections in humans. The virus is transmitted by the faecal-oral route. It infects and damages the cells that line the small intestine and causes gastroenteritis. Although rotavirus was discovered in 1973 and accounts for up to 50% of hospitalisations for severe diarrhoea in infants and children, its importance is still not widely known within the public health community, particularly in developing countries. In addition to its impact on human health, rotavirus also infects animals, and is a pathogen of livestock.

    8. Chickenpox

Chickenpox is a highly contagious illness caused by primary infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV). It usually starts with vesicular skin rash mainly on the body and head rather than at the periphery and becomes itchy, raw pockmarks, which mostly heal without scarring. On examination, the observer typically finds lesions at various stages of healing. Chickenpox is an airborne disease spread easily through coughing or sneezing of ill individuals or through direct contact with secretions from the rash. A person with chickenpox is infectious one to two days before the rash appears. They remain contagious until all lesions have crusted over. Immunocompromised patients are contagious during the entire period new lesions keep appearing. Crusted lesions are not contagious. It takes from 10 to 21 days after initial infection for the disease to develop.

    9. Influenza

Influenza is a viral infection that affects mainly the nose, throat, bronchi and, occasionally, lungs. Infection usually lasts for about a week, and is characterized by sudden onset of high fever, aching muscles, headache and severe malaise, non-productive cough, sore throat and rhinitis. The virus is transmitted easily from person to person via droplets and small particles produced when infected people cough or sneeze. Influenza tends to spread rapidly in seasonal epidemics. Most infected people recover within one to two weeks without requiring medical treatment. However, in the very young, the elderly, and those with other serious medical conditions, infection can lead to severe complications of the underlying condition, pneumonia and death.

    10. Common Cold

The common cold (also known as nasopharyngitis, acute viral rhinopharyngitis, acute coryza, or a cold) (Latin: rhinitis acuta catarrhalis) is a viral infectious disease of the upper respiratory system, caused primarily by rhinoviruses and coronaviruses. Common symptoms include a cough, sore throat, runny nose, and fever. There is no cure for the common cold, but symptoms usually resolve in 7 to 10 days, with some symptoms possibly lasting for up to three weeks. The common cold is the most frequent infectious disease in humans with the average adult contracting two to four infections a year and the average child contracting between 6 and 12. Collectively, colds, influenza, and other upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) with similar symptoms are included in the diagnosis of influenza-like illness.

Cigarette Smoking Is Injurious To Health

Cigarette smoking is injurious to health” - so screams the hoardings, cigarette advertisements and ironically even the cigarette packet thatyou hold. Yet, smokers continue to smoke with the “thought” - thewarning is not for me.

When you smoke, with each puff of smoke that you inhale into yourlungs, you pollute your body with more than 2500 poisonous chemicalscapable of causing different types of cancers.
The major contents of cigarettes are:
  • Nicotine - A highly addictive, colorless, poisonous drug derived from the tobacco plant and used as an insecticide (an insecticide, mind you!). It is the substance in tobacco to which smokers can become addicted.
  • Carbon monoxide - A colorless, odorless, highly poisonous gas.
  • Tar - A solid residue of tobacco smoke containing byproducts of combustion. Yes, the same substance used to lay roads!
Not only do smokers poison themselves, they also end up poisoning those around them (nonsmokers) who sometimes inhale this smoke (passive or secondary smoking). These innocent people can include children - often your very own.

Complications of smoking
In women, smoking can lead to many complications: Shortened life span.
  • Cancer of the cervix, lungs or other organs.
  • Heart disease.
  • Infertility and other reproductive problems.
  • Early Menopause.
Click here to view an animation on complications of smoking.

Quitting smokingThese complications can be quite easily prevented by just quitting smoking. Taking a resolution to quit smoking is easy, but it is difficult to keep it. Nevertheless, it is not something that cannot be done. The good news is that, quitting smoking can reverse some of the bad effects that it has on your body.

Symptoms while trying to quitWhile you try to quit smoking you may undergo a variety of withdrawal symptoms (see box) that can frustrate you. Be determined not to smoke even when these symptoms peak.

Tips to quit smokingQuitting smoking has wonderful health benefits even if you have been smoking for years. Here are some tips to help you quit smoking once and for all:

  • First, make up your mind to stop smoking. Think of the health benefits of leading a nicotine-free life.
  • Not only do you help your own body by quitting—you give cleaner air for your children and family to breathe, you save money, you smell better and you live longer to protect and provide for your family.
  • Team up with a friend to quit. If you are around smokers, tell them about your inclination to quit and if possible request them not to smoke in your presence.
  • Knowing the withdrawal symptoms will help you too. Do not get frustrated. Exercise restraint when you feel the urge to smoke.
  • Quit on a special day, such as your daughter or son’s birthday. This will help you remember the date that you quit and can make it easier to keep your promise of not smoking again. And every year you can celebrate your “cigarette-quitting” anniversary.

Benefits of quittingThe rewards of giving up smoking are many and they are instantaneous. Your body starts reversing much of the damage caused by smoking. Your surroundings will smell better. A few years after quitting, your risk of heart disease will be at par with a person who has never smoked a single cigarette. You will be around for a longer period of time to support, provide for and protect your loving children and family. And think of all the money you would save. But remember, it takes time and patience to quit a habit. One slip does not mean failure, it only means delay. So keep at it till you succeed.
